Open seas is our multi-season collection inspired by the deep ocean and all the marvels and unknowns that come with it. As you probably know, a collection is planned and designed well in advance with the objective of launching at a specific time. Of course, who could have imagined two years ago that COVID-19 will come to stay with us for the entire 2020 and force us to adapt to a new way of working and living.
Even if this collection is launched later than we expected, we are very happy to bring it at this time of the year, ready to enter a new season and keep adjusting to a socially distanced world. COLOR, it’s exactly what we need at this moment. Vibrant colors that boost our mood and remind us of how astounding our surroundings are. Those surroundings like the ocean that today we don’t get to enjoy in person but that at the same time are having a chance to breathe, regrow and heal.
Back in 2017, I had the opportunity to experience diving for the first time and life couldn’t choose a better place for me, Bali, Indonesia. The deep ocean with its colorful landscape and elegant inhabitants moved away the fear of the newcomer and welcomed a colorful dance of indescribable emotions, allowing a new Tucketts collection to be born.
The new Open Seas Collection is inspired by that wonderful experience and the awareness of endangered ecosystems and species that we hope to help conserve. Anklet Tropical Reef and Allegro Coral Scales designs were influenced by the Coral reefs, which are some of the most diverse ecosystems in the world as defined by the NOAA. “Coral polyps, the animals primarily responsible for building reefs, can take many forms: large reef building colonies, graceful flowing fans, and even small, solitary organisms. Thousands of species of corals have been discovered; some live in warm, shallow, tropical seas and others in the cold, dark depths of the ocean.”
One of our favorite sea creatures are the jellyfish. They come in a variety of colors and sizes and their role in the ocean is still under debate. Did you know that thanks to the study of the crystal jellyfish and the discovery of its bioluminescence, a team of scientists that won the 2008 Nobel Prize in Chemistry were able to extract and develop green fluorescent protein that is now used to track the way cancer tumors form new blood vessels, the way Alzheimer’s disease kills brain neurons and the way HIV-infected cells produce new viruses? It’s impossible not to honor this amazing species. Check out our Allegro Striped Jellyfish that will illuminate your workout.
Blue is one of our clients favorite colors and this collection is full of them. Anklet Open Seas, Ballerina Tidal Waves and Allegro Bluefin are designed with different shades of blues that mirror the variety of shades found in the seas around the world. From the calm waters to the formation of great waves, there is an almost unlimited amount of blue shades for every taste.
Many of us grew up watching “The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau”, it was for us the opening door to discover life in the deep seas and also how humankind was destroying them. And now COVID-19 has been another eye-opening, we have seen how lockdowns, reduction of all kinds of transportation and the lack of presence of humans in nature in general have allowed the ocean to do her own clean up and healing, even if it’s still at a small scale, it has been evident the positive impact of the reduction of human activity in nature.
Despite the above positive outcome of the current pandemic, lockdowns have increased illegal fishing and slowed down research and the work with fishing communities. Small scale and artisanal fishers have been the most affected by having their only source of income reduced. It’s our belief that happy people can create and preserve a happy planet, and for this reason we have created Tucketts for Seas. A portion of the profit of the Open Seas Collection will be donated to OCEANA, a leading organization that exclusively works in the conservation of the ocean and its ecosystems while helping fishing communities to properly develop. Join us today in this adventure, it is our mission to make the world a better place one pair of Tucketts at a time.
